LG's Prada Phone Not Selling Well

I was back in Hong Kong recently and one of my routines was to go to the mobile phone market in Mongkok to see what's available and to see whether the rumours of parallel imports of the Apple iPhone were true (I didn't see any when I was there :( ).

The interesting thing was there was a lot of the LG Prada phones for sale there. I queried one of the guys there and they were telling me it was not selling well. I'm not surprised as the LG phones that I have tested (like the LG Chocolate) had some issues which I would like to rectify. So what are the issues I have with LG?

Usability
One thing I found was LG phones in general were not that user-friendly. For instance, on the LG Chocolate (and I believe to an extent on the Prada phone), you have to keep pressing the multitouch button to scroll down a page which became a real chore.

Browser
The mobile browser I found on all LG phones to be of extremely low quality. The rendition of images and text are not clear and it had a confusing menu layout.

I haven't used the Prada phone as yet (the guy in Mongkok will only let me look at it if I wanted to buy it! :P ) but given it is not selling well, I believe part of the reason may be due to what I have mentioned above.

To be continued!

Apple's iPhone - A Couple of Thoughts

There has been a lot of criticism on the Apple iPhone. I thought I should have an impartial look into a couple of the criticisms and see how valid the they are.

No Flash and Java
This is true however most of the websites I visit only use Flash for advertising which I find personally very annoying. I believe this is a non issue and quite an overly harsh criticism of the iPhone as a majority of mobile browser on the market do not support Flash anyway. Apple apparently will make available updates which will rectify this problem.

Regarding Java support, I am presuming this is referring to Java applets and midlets (J2ME). As for Java applets, I believe it is a good thing not to support it as I found Java applets do not work all the time. Java applets are also a dying bred and as AJAX becomes more sophisticated, I believe there will be no more need for Java applets.

As for midlets/J2ME, these are primarily used for games on mobile devices. It would be nice to have and I think just like Flash Apple will provide an update for this.

EDGE
Initially I was surprised that Apple used EDGE however then I did a bit of investigation and believe it actually makes initial sense for using EDGE in the US market. Cingular/AT&T is a GSM operator (which practicually the whole world uses) and from what I understand, EDGE network currently has a better coverage than AT&T's 3G network so I believe Apple went for better coverage rather than bandwidth. Also it will be a natural migration to a 3G enabled iPhone for Europe and Asia.

Just like the iPod I would wait for the second generation iPhone to come out. It will be a far more powerful mobile! :)

More on the iPhone later!

Criminals Must Pay!!

"Criminals are always looking for new ways to make money, online identity theft and fraud are the latest techniques," said Detective Chief Superintendent Nigel Mawer at the Metropolitan Police Economic and Specialist Crime Unit.

Security companies have become aware of this and have started to offer products that could help people protect themselves.

One is Garlik, set up by the founders of the internet bank Egg, along with privacy experts, lawyers, and researchers from the University of Southampton.

The aim of the company is to give people power over their digital identities by showing them what information is out there on the web, how it can be exploited and what steps they might take to reduce the risk of becoming a victim of digital identity fraud.

Privacy and Letters

Most people know that you should not throw away letters or bills that contain your personal information.

If you do, an unscrupulous criminal might raid your bin in the middle of the night and steal your discarded details.

By the time you sit down to breakfast, the midnight marauder will have assumed your identity and started applying for mortgages and credit cards in your name.

In reality the process takes a lot longer but this kind scenario has had an impact on the public consciousness.

People are now aware of ID fraud and some are starting to take measures to prevent it.
